A basic rag and some paint can create a textured effect.
The illusion of texture can be created on walls and surfaces using paint alone. Depending on the look you want, you can apply several techniques to produce different results. Make a flat wall appear bumpy by painting one way, or use another method to transform a plain, boring surface to one with the appearance of rich, crinkled fabric. You can achieve these looks and textures if you use the proper tools and take the proper steps.
Instructions
1. Create a textured look using a sponge. Sponging paint can make a surface look rough and raised. Paint the entire area with a base color using latex paint. Allow the paint to dry. Apply a contrasting color to a sea sponge by pressing the sponge into a paint tray. Press the sponge onto the surface starting from the top and working down to the bottom. Repeat this process until the entire surface is covered.
2. Create a fabric look by rag rolling. Paint the entire surface with latex paint. Mix one part paint of a contrasting color with one part glazing medium. Apply the mixture to a rolled rag using a large paintbrush. Roll the paint onto the wall with the rag, applying more paint as necessary. This will create the illusion of wrinkled fabric.
3. Create a corrugated, line effect by dragging paint. Paint the surface a solid color. Select a tinted glaze in a contrasting color. Apply the paint to the surface in a criss-cross pattern using a paintbrush. Then drag the paint in a vertical direction with a wide, dry paintbrush for a lined look.
4. Stipple the surface to create the illusion of a rough, stone-like finish. Paint the wall a base color in latex paint. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. Load paint onto a stiff paintbrush, like a stenciling brush. Hold the brush upright and tap the brush onto the surface creating many tiny dots. Allow the paint to dry and apply another color if desired. Many colors can be added, depending on the desired look.
