Design Your Own Stick Figures

Stick figures are a simple way to represent the human figure.

The stick figure is a standard way to quickly sketch the human figure. It is a fast way to draw the human figure in a particular pose. The detail of a stick figure is usually minimal, but contains enough information to show a single action or posture. Adding personality to a stick figure is simple, since any detail stands out. Designing your own stick figure is a simple way to express yourself in art, since it requires little actual skill. Yet the range of activities, emotions and personalities you can depict in a stick figure is broad. Getting started designing your own stick figures only takes a few strokes of the pen or pencil.

Instructions

1. Draw a circle for the head. Add a face and hair to personalize the figure. Draw a smile, frown or open mouth to indicate happiness, sadness or surprise. Add head and facial hair and jewelry to make your figure more expressive.

2. Draw a vertical line down from the head for the body. Bend the line to indicate different poses. Bend it a bit forward to indicate the posture of an old person. Draw the line sideways to indicate a reclining person. Draw the line downward at an angle to indicate the body leaning forward or backward in movement, such as in running or tripping backward.

3. Draw one line from each side of the body to represent the arms. Add a bend in each line to represent elbows. Pose the arms. For example, draw the arms with elbows out and the hands on the hips for a pose indicating indignation. Or draw the arms reaching up with the elbows out to indicate celebration.

4. Draw two lines from the bottom end of the body to represent the legs. To make the legs more complex, add a bend in each line to represent knees. Add a short line at the end of the legs to represent feet. Draw the legs in different positions to represent different activities, such as running, sitting and kneeling.
