Remove Acrylic Paint From Hair

Painting with acrylic paints is a great way to create beautiful art quickly. But because acrylics are fast-drying, any paint that gets on your skin or in your hair can be difficult to remove. Acrylic paint is water-based and dries in a plastic-like form. If large amounts get in your hair (50 percent or more coverage), you may need to get a new, and shorter, hairstyle. But if you accidentally dunked a strand or two of hair onto your palette, there is a much easier, and less traumatic, way to remove the paint.

Instructions

1. Take a warm shower to soften the acrylic and make it more flexible. Shampoo and condition as usual; this will help remove some of the paint. Completing these steps while showering will also help minimize any mess.

2. Squeeze a small amount of baby oil into your hand and smooth it directly onto the hair area that has paint on it. Vegetable or olive oil can be substituted. Special glue-bond hair extension removing oil can also be used.

3. Hold the hair in one hand and begin combing downwards in tiny strokes over the paint-covered area. Make sure to keep a tight hold on the hair close to the root. This will keep any hair from being pulled out when combing.

4. Continue combing, regularly rinsing the comb's teeth under running water. The paint should become caught in the comb's fine teeth, while the baby oil will keep the hair from getting tangled while combing. Comb until all of the paint is removed.

5. Shampoo your hair to remove any baby oil. You may have to shampoo more than once.

6. Dry your hair with a towel gently. If there are still specks of paint in your hair, run the comb over these areas until the paint is removed.
