Comic Book Illustration Careers

Are you a huge comic book fan and think it would be awesome to make a living in the industry? Well if you do, you're going to have to pick one or more of these specific jobs within the industry.


Writer


The writer is where the whole story begins. He must be proficient at story structure and characterization, and needs to have a thorough knowledge of what's gone on before in the world of comic books.


Penciller


The art duties of a comic book are split up, and its the penciller who kicks off the process. To do this job, you must be excellent at drawing, and understand tell a story through pictures.


Inker


Much more than a "tracer," an inker makes the penciller's lines able to be reproduced. An inker must have a very steady hand, and be very neat and clean with their work.


Colorist


A colorist takes the pencilled and inked artwork and scans it into a computer. She then uses graphics software to fill in the colors and special effects. A colorist must have a good handle on colors, and be very good with a computer.


Letterer


A letterer uses type fonts and computer drawing tools to create all of the word balloons and sound effects within the pages of a comic book. He may also be required to do some of the design work, including the front cover or letter pages.


Editor


The editor puts it all together. It is her job to choose who will do each individual job, and then make sure everything is done on time. All final decisions about story or art are also in the hands of the editor.
