Make A Snowman Out Of Construction Paper With Geometric Shapes

Making a paper snowman is a fun, quiet activity for small children.

Making a construction paper snowman is a fun winter activity that can help children learn more about geometric shapes. It can be a great bonding experience for parent and child as they work on the project together. To add a special touch to your finished snowman picture, glue areas where you want to add silvery glitter -- to the snowman, the background or both -- and then sprinkle the glitter to simulate sparkly snow.

Instructions

1. Draw or trace three circular shapes in graduating sizes on white construction paper. These shapes will be the body of the snowman. Make circles using a protractor, compass, cup or any round object that is a good size for the snowman's three main parts. For a more natural shape, draw three freestyle circles in graduating sizes. Make the circles small enough to fit on the background piece of construction paper, on which you'll glue your snowman pieces.

2. Draw oval eyes, a crescent-moon-shaped mouth, three round buttons, a long rectangular scarf and a two rectangles for the top hat -- one for the brim and another for the main/top part -- on black construction paper. Use a light-colored pencil or crayon to see the outlines on the black paper. For variety, use different colored construction paper to make any or all of these elements.

3. Trace a triangular, carrot-shaped nose on orange construction paper. Help your child determine the size of all facial parts, if needed, so they'll fit on the snowman's face -- the smallest white circle from Step 1.

4. Cut out the geometric shapes outlined in Steps 1 to 3.

5. Lay the construction paper that will serve as the background for your snowman on your work surface. This construction paper can be any color, but it is best to choose a color that is not the same as the snowman, the hat or the scarf. Light blue, to match the color of the sky, is a popular choice.

6. Position the three parts of the snowman's body on the background construction paper. Clip a small sliver off the bottom section of the snowman to simulate it sitting on the ground.

7. Apply a thin layer of glue to each body part -- one at at time -- on the side where you traced the shape. Gluing the traced side hides any imperfections or markings that remain from cutting out the shapes along the outlines. Do not glue all parts in advance, because it may dry before you get to adhering it.

8. Build your snowman by placing each shape on the background construction paper -- starting with the largest section of the snowman at the bottom, with the flat side down. Place the middle section above the bottom section, slightly overlapping it. Place the head above the middle section, slightly overlapping the middle section

9. Glue the backs (the side you traced on) of the head elements including the eyes, nose and hat. Then stick each part in place on the head.

10. Place the scarf and buttons on the body, after gluing the backs.
