Paint Outlines On Walls

With a few strokes, you can have a painted wall outline and updated look for your room.

While bare walls may work for many design schemes, adding art to plain walls can really liven up a room. Adding a bit of art to your wall with a painted outline can bring even more layers, depth and visual excitment to a space. Using a painted outline on a wall to frame a photo or piece of art is a quick, versatile and easily reversable way of adding personality, color and flair to your space.

Instructions

1. Position the item you are outlining on the wall. You will need to use the item as a reference for determining the position of your frame.

2. Use a pencil to mark how close or far away you want your outline to be from the item you are outlining. This mark will signify the inside edge of your frame. Depending on your taste, you may want a tight, neat piece, so you will want to mark the wall close to your item. If you want a looser feel that incorporates more white space, mark the wall farther away from your item.

3. Draw the shape of the outline around the item you are outlining. Use a ruler if you need to create straight lines.

4. Determine the thickness of your outline by making a mark along the outline's line that is farther away from the painting.

5. Measure the distance between your outline line and the new mark.

6. Using the ruler, make several more marks a few inches apart, but the same distance from your first line to create uniform thickness.

7. Connect the marks so that your outline now has a second edge. Use the ruler to help you draw straight lines.

8. Remove the item that you are outlining from the wall and put it aside.

9. Place strips of painter's tape along both edges of the outline so that there is a clearly defined area outlined by the painter's tape.

10. Use a paintbrush to paint the wall between the strips of painter's tape and wait for the paint to dry.

11. Peel off the painter's tape to reveal your painted outline.
