Artist Talent Agencies

Artist Talent Agencies

The acting profession is an exciting and rewarding one, yet filled with obstacles. Perhaps the greatest obstacle is the task of finding an agent or manager to represent you as you move forward in your career. There are some crucial things an actor must know and do before reaching out for representation.

Get Your Picture Taken

This is an example of a good headshot.

Get head shots done by a professional photographer. No matter what stage or on screen training you have had, you now need to market yourself as a product. This may sound strange, but the first thing to do when seeking representation is to prepare yourself. Make sure to get your shots in color, not black and white. This picture should show you on a good day, it should be lit well, and reflect your personality. You needn't be too smiley or silly. Agents want to see who you are to decide if you are a good fit for their agency.

Write a Professional Resume

Put together a good-looking resume to attach to the back of your head shots. The resume should be easily readable and concise, with your name, height, hair color, eye color, and contact information at the top. Your resume should include all productions you have done, any education related to performing, and special skills at the bottom of the page. You may also provide a list of TV and film credits if you have them.

Research Agencies

Go online to find what agencies are in your area. If you live in Los Angeles or New York City, grab a copy of "Call Sheet," printed by Back Stage Magazine. This book lists all of the managers and agencies in your area, along with their phone numbers, names of agents, and preferences for submissions. Most agencies accept head shots and resumes via mail. Make notes of which agencies seem geared towards your career goals. Do they specialize in TV and film, or do they work with mostly stage actors?

Invite Them to a Show

Invite agents and managers to come see you when you're in a show. It will give them a chance to see your skills in action. Agents rarely, if ever, sign an actor without seeing his or her work first. It's vital to get your presence out there. Be shameless. Invite everyone. It may end up getting you signed.

Reach Out

Talk to people you know who are in the acting business, especially if they have an agent. Ask for tips and advice, and really listen. They might even offer to introduce you to their agent.

Perseverance

Keep sending out your head shots and resumes. Continue to talk to people in the business. The acting profession is a difficult one, but one that is filled with creativity and excitement. Today's celebrities have gotten where they are with hard work and persistence. Follow their lead. Keep going!
