Install A Skutt Kiln Pyrometer

Using a kiln to quickly bake and heat your ceramic or clay art is an essential part of making bowls, vases and other items. If the kiln is set to the wrong temperature, however, your art could crack or break before it is finished. A Skutt kiln pyrometer is a digital thermometer that you can install in your kiln to ensure it is the proper temperature. You will need to mount the pyrometer to the kiln for it to work properly.

Instructions

1. Attach the thermocouple plug at the end of the thermocouple wire on the kiln to the port located at the top of the pyrometer. Line up the "+" and "-" prongs with the holes with the same symbol on the port. Push the plug in until you hear a click to indicate it is locked into place.

2. Attach a 1/2-inch drill bit to your power drill. Insert the pyrometer thermometer into the hole located at the rear of the kiln and mark the location of the two mounting holes on the outside of the thermometer. Remove the thermometer and use the drill to create holes in the marked location to mount the thermometer.

3. Place the thermometer back into the hole and press inward until the back is flush against the body of the kiln. Insert the provided mounting screws into the holes you drilled and use the drill to insert them fully to secure the thermometer in place.

4. Place the pyrometer control case onto a location on a nearby wall to the kiln and mark the location of the mounting hole on the back. Use the power drill to make a hole in the wall at that location and then place the case back on the wall. Use the drill to insert the provided mounting screws. Ensure that the cables running from the thermometer to the case are not touching the outside of the kiln.
