Knit Peace Signs

Knit a peace sign as intarsia or applique.

There are two different ways to knit a peace sign: as intarsia, or a pattern in a whole, flat piece; or as a separate, applique-type piece. The applique style could be used on fabric, or perhaps as a coaster or starched as an ornament. The intarsia style, while presented here as a square, could be adapted into a sweater, tote bag, knitting needle caddy, or many other projects.

Instructions

Applique-Style Knit Peace Sign

1. Cast on 60 stitches (20 on a double-pointed needle). On row 1, knit around; on row 2, knit around; on row 3, knit 3 knit 2 together (16 on the double-pointed needle); on row 4, knit around; and on row 5, knit 3, bind off 12 , knit 4, bind off 12, knit 3, bind off 5, knit 3, bind off 5 and knit 1.

Adjust stitches so that (with five double-pointed needles), the last stitches and first three stitches are on needle 1 (left angle line of peace sign); the next five are on needle 2 (top line); the next four on needle 3 (right angle line); and the next four on needle 4 (bottom up line).

If you'd rather use four double-pointed needles, hold the stitches instructed above for needles 3 and 4 on the same needle. The rest is in stockinette so put stitches wherever it is easiest to manage.

2. Complete the following all in stockinette stitch: Needle 2 -- one row, break yarn; needle 1 -- eight rows stockinette stitch, one row knit 2 together, break yarn; needle 3 -- eight rows stockinette stitch, one row knit 2 together, break yarn; needle 4 -- eight rows. On row 9, add stitches from needle 3. Stockinette stitch the next row, adding stitches from needle 1 at end. Row: stockinette stitch 1, 2 together, 2 together, stockinette stitch 3. Row: stockinette stitch 1, 2 together, 2 together, stockinette stitch 1. Stockinette stitch two rows. Join and bind off with needle 2.
