Do It Yourself Photos To Canvas

Digital photos can be printed on inkjet canvas to create an artistic "painting." According to the online site Imaging Resource, inkjet canvas is considered a glossy paper (like glossy photo paper) with a canvas substrate (i.e., made of canvas material rather than paper). Many inkjet printers can accommodate thicker sheets of paper, and software can be used to enhance the effects of photos to be printed on canvas to convey an artistic or paint-like rendering.

Printer Compatibility

Inkjet canvas paper is available at large office supply and craft stores. Inkjet canvas paper is made from cotton or nylon fibers and can be coated to preserve the print. The ink is applied to the surface of the paper and is absorbed in the fibers. Inkjet canvas is thicker than conventional papers (usually 7.5 mil or up to 27 pounds versus inkjet multipurpose paper at 20 to 24 pounds). Check your printer's specifications to make sure it can accommodate a heavier-weight paper in the paper feed (to avoid jams). Be aware that artist-grade inkjet canvas is thicker and may be more susceptible to paper jams if it is placed in a paper tray; consider single-sheet feeding into your printer if this tray is available. Check your printer options whether a setting is available for inkjet canvas because the ink and resolution are calibrated accordingly.

Paper Selection

Inkjet canvas is considered a specialty paper, which is usually an off-white color. Like most specialty paper, inkjet canvas is available in various grades such as premium for fine art or archival purposes or thinner art canvas. Review the textures available to optimize your work, such as linen, jacquard or satin finishes. Plan the negative (white) space in your print to be off-white or ivory, or purchase paper in the same hue as the inkjet canvas so that you can generate a test print to see the effect and make adjustments using your software.

Software

The finish or texture of inkjet canvas is not suitable for generating detailed digital photos. Use software that can create a painted, mosaic or canvas effect for printing on inkjet canvas. Consider images that have larger blocks of color rather than fine details to print on inkjet canvas.

Crafts

Consider other types of inkjet canvas or paper to create craft projects such as quilts or totes. Like any paper, inkjet canvas can be cut. Unlike conventional paper, some inkjet canvas paper can be sewn or affixed to other fabrics. For example, MCG Paper provides a type of inkjet fabric sheet that can be used for quilts or to make doll's clothes.
