As a freelance artist, you can work anywhere.
As an artist, you can create the world as you see it. You can use different mediums, whether paper, clay, or software, to communicate your thoughts and vision. Many people cannot convert the ideas they have into art, and as a freelance artist you'll have the chance to work with different clients to help create their vision. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that about 60 percent of artists work freelance. Choosing to work freelance has several advantages.
Your Personal Vision
In some business settings, the manager wants artists to adhere to a certain style, or to work within the company's guidelines. This helps the company build a brand of recognizable work, but can limit your own personal creative vision. As a freelancer, you are your own boss. You work directly with your clients and have the freedom to add your own touch to the project.
Flexible Hours
Many art or design jobs require a set schedule. Artists may work regular business hours for these jobs, or long nights and weekends, but as an employee they must stick to the schedule to keep their job. As a freelance artist, you can chose your own schedule. While you must meet with the clients on their time, and stick to deadlines, you can do the actual work when you want. This gives you more freedom in both your work life and your personal life.
Freedom of Location
Typically, to work for a company, you must live near the company's location. This can mean either relocating or passing up jobs out of your geographic area. As a freelancer, you can work from anywhere you wish. You can chose to stay in a location for personal reasons. You can also travel to clients to complete one-time projects for them, giving you the opportunity to work with clients you could not have worked for full time.
More Opportunities
Artists who work in a traditional business setting have limitations on what kind of work they produce, what clients they work for and how much income they make. The business typically selects their clients, determines project scopes and sets salaries. As a freelancer, you can work for any client you want. You can chose to accept or deny projects. You also determine your own salary, since freelancers can work as much or as little as they want.
