Use Shapes To Draw Animals & Kids

Animals and kids can be hard to draw, but it is much easier when broken down into shapes.

Animals and kids are not the easiest objects to learn to draw. But breaking down the complex shape into many simple shapes makes it much easier to draw. It is a great method for beginners, but most seasoned artists still use simple shapes to begin their drawings of animals and people. It keeps the drawing proportionate. Once you master drawing them proportionately you can start playing with the proportions by making the simple shapes bigger or smaller.

Instructions

1. When breaking things down into shapes, the head is a circle, the body is an oval, legs are rectangles.

Put tracing paper over the reference image. Look at the image through the tracing paper and notice which parts of the animal or child are bigger than others. These will be your main shapes. Decipher whether these shapes look like a circle, oval, rectangle, square or triangle.

2. If drawing a kid, it should look like a humanoid robot during this step.

Start lightly tracing over the image onto the tracing paper putting in place all the shapes you see. Keep going until you have all the shapes you need. The finished product should sort of like a robot version of the animal or kid you are drawing.

3. You may choose to take your drawing a step further by coloring it in.

Draw the outline outside of the shapes. This will unify the shapes. Draw this outline darker than your shapes step. Continue to draw in details of the clothing, hair or facial features.
