Draw Flowers For Kids

Sketch your flower before putting paint to paper.

Most children enjoy art. Whether you want to make a personalized picture for a kid's room, classroom or for a hands-on art project, learning draw flowers requires just a few simple steps. Because there is a variety of possibilities to what you can create, from the medium you use to the type and style of flowers you draw, you might want to make a series of drawings to create a coloring book.

Instructions

1. Choose a photograph or drawing of a flower to use as a guide. Trace the image onto a piece of tracing paper to get a feel for drawing the particular flower you chose before putting it on sketch paper.

2. Make a pencil sketch, referring to your template image as needed. Sketch the flower one part at a time, beginning with the petals before tackling the center. Add the stem and leaves (if there are any) last. A basic flower, such as a daisy, can have five to seven petals around the center.

3. Go over the outline with the medium of your choice once you are satisfied with the initial sketch. For coloring pages, markers work best. For wall art, use oil pastels, watercolor (on watercolor paper), acrylic paints or gouache. For hands-on craft projects, use any combination of media, including scholastic paints, beads, markers and magazine clippings.

4. Fill in the outline with color. If you have images in the floral background, make these colors lighter to indicate that they are farther away; this will also lend a soft-focus look to the image. If the drawing is for one child in particular, use her favorite color often in the drawing.

5. Personalize the image by writing the child's name on the image in block letters or letters with circles at their endpoints. This works well if the drawing is a gift or for wall art. Alternatively, make letters using controlled scribbles, and alternate colors with each letter.
