Draw A Rooster

Roosters are attractive birds that are fun to draw. Roosters have significance in many cultures, including Chinese astrology, and are a well-loved example of country art. You can draw a realistic rooster or a cartoon rooster. You might draw a rooster for a card, for a poster, or as a painting on a basket or an old wooden breadboard. Roosters are easy to draw if you break them down into steps.

Instructions

1. When you draw any animal, imagine what the individual parts look like. A rooster looks like a complicated mess of feathers at first. But imagine how it's made up of a head, neck, body, and tail.

2. Sketch the basic parts of a rooster, using a pencil. The head is a circle. The neck is a slanted cone. The body is roughly a heart shape. When you add the legs, remember that a rooster often stands with its legs at a slight slant---the feet should be slightly forward of the thighs. This is to keep the bird in balance.

3. Sketch the beak, wattle, comb, and tail feathers. Remember that the comb comes out of the beak as well as out of the head.

4. Turn those separate body parts into one animal. Connect the head, neck, and body with smooth lines. Add an eye and second leg. Add feathers all over the bird.

5. Once you're satisfied with your finished sketch, go over it with permanent ink. Trace over the lines you want with a waterproof black pen. Wait till the pen is thoroughly dry, then carefully erase the pencil lines. Or, just go straight to the coloring step.

6. Color your rooster with colored pencils, crayons, or markers. Or, scan your rooster and color it in with Photoshop. Color the wattle and comb red. Be creative in coloring in your feathers. Roosters can be black, white, orange--or many combinations of colors. They can even have blue tailfeathers.

7. If you used markers, wait till your rooster dries before touching it.
