Ideas For Paint Textures

There are many ways to create texture with paint.

Using textures when painting a wall or surface not only creates an interesting and personalized focal point but also will hide small imperfections on a wall or area. There are several different ideas a person can implement to create texture on a surface or to add texture to paint. Experiment with different tools, methods and colors to create a personalized textured finish.

Sand Texture

An innovative way to change the texture of paint is to add a small amount of sand to the paint. Most home improvement and hardware stores sell pre-portioned dry silica sand in varying textures, made especially for adding to paint. Use latex paint and add silica sand until reaching the desired texture. Apply two coats of paint with either a sponge roller or low pile roller. For kitchens and bathrooms, use specialized paint that is compatible to silica sand. Adding sand to paint is an inexpensive and simple method of creating an eye-catching texture.

Crinkle Paper

The crinkling paper technique is a simple way to add a uniform texture to any wall or area. Materials needed to apply the technique are painters tape, tissue paper, paint tray, paintbrush, foam roller and handle, and latex paint in the desired color. First, take the painters tape and tape off all baseboards and crown moldings. Starting in the top corner of a wall, use a paintbrush to paint an area slightly larger than the tissue paper, crinkle one sheet of tissue paper, open and apply smoothly to the wet paint. Take the foam roller and paint over the tissue paper. To complete, cover the entire area with the crinkled paper.

Ragging

Ragging is a painting technique in which a person creates texture on a freshly painted and glazed wall with a rag. This technique works best on a clean and prepared surface painted with two coats of latex primer. To complete, use a tinted oil based glaze or a mixture of latex paint and a latex based glaze. Apply the base color and the final color. Use a rag and create the desired texture in the wet glaze or paint. This easy finish is a great way to personalize an area.

Spattering

Spattering is a painting technique that creates an interesting texture on walls and objects with smooth surfaces. There are several different ways to utilize the splattering technique. A person can use a paintbrush to splatter one or two colors against a solid background, or use a variety of colors to add depth. Try applying splatter with a spray gun, which allows for varying pressure, added control and different kinds of splattering and splash effects.
