Publish a Cartoon Book
Finding the right publisher for a cartoon book can be a challenge. Cartoon books are considered a niche publishing genre, limiting the publishing avenues and options for an author. Smart publisher shopping on your part is the key to publishing a cartoon book. A publisher that specializes in niche markets and art books will be more interested in your cartoon book, and will typically market it more successfully than a publisher specializing in historical and how-to publications. Overall, it takes a lot of research and perseverance to see your book printed.
Instructions
1. Study your publisher markets carefully. A copy of the Writer's Market, or a subscription to the Writer's Market online provides a list of active publishers and agents. There are also a number of free online resources available for writers (see Resources).
2. Select a couple of markets that have guidelines stating they accept cartoon book manuscripts. Look for humor publishers in particular. The guidelines will also be specific about the type of cartoon books each publisher accepts and publishes. These are your target markets.
3. Read guidelines carefully before you submit. Following individual publisher guidelines increases the chance of publishing your cartoon book. Unless you have an agent, make sure the publisher you want to submit your work to accepts non-agent material.
4. Submit your work to selected publishers according to publisher guidelines. The guidelines tell you where and who to submit your material, submission specifics and what you could be paid for your work.
5. Wait the specified time indicated by each publisher before you inquire as to whether a publisher has received your manuscript and if it is under consideration. Market listings usually provide an estimated response time.
