Hang A Canvas Painting Without Nails

Your beautiful canvas painting can be displayed on the wall without nailing it up.

While good old fashioned nails are the easiest way to hang a canvas painting, good old fashioned plaster walls may not take to the hammering and nailing very well. If you are a renter, any damage to the wall in the hanging process will come out of the security deposit when it's time to move. Additionally, nails are of no use on brick walls. Aside from deciding not to hang the canvas paintings, there are viable options for hanging the paintings without nails. Using alternatives to nails not only prevents damage to the wall, but will also facilitate moving the painting and reusing the hanging method.

Instructions

1. Measure the wall and mark the targeted location of the painting. Clean the area that the painting is to be attached to, preferably with rubbing alcohol to eliminate oil and dirt.

2. Attach hanging strips to either side of the canvas and one on the top of the canvas. Peel off the backing and press firmly to the wall. Select the hanging strip that is best for your painting based on size. Command brand strips come in small (for 8-by-10 frames) medium (18-by-24 frames) and large (for 24-by-36 frames).

3. Peel off the protective covers from the sticky pad and attach the pad to the back of the hook. Press the hook firmly to the targeted location of the hook. Hang the painting on the hook. If the painting does not have a hanging wire on the back of it, attach one to it before using the fixed wall hook. Select the type and number of hooks based on the weight of the canvas painting -- bathroom hooks will typically hold more weight.

4. Follow the same directions for the regular fixed hooks to attach the sawtooth hangers to the wall. Take care to use the sawtooth hangers for small canvas paintings because these hangers can only handle a maximum of 5 pounds.
