Learn English With Cartoons

Cartoons can help people learn English


Learning the English language by use of cartoons is increasing in popularity. The use of cartoons is a motivational device that works for English-speakers as well as those for whom English will be a second language. By using graphics and images, the student can gain insight into the meaning displayed. Understanding concepts by linking images to words can help learners quickly develop their language skills which, in turn, increases their understanding of read, write and speak English.

Procedures


1. Cut out a cartoon from a magazine or newspaper or copy one from the Internet. Paste it in your notebook. Look for any difficult vocabulary words in the cartoon. Look up their meanings in the dictionary and write a sentence in your notebook using each new word.


2. Try to figure out the meaning of the cartoon and summarize it in one sentence. Write in your notebook an original caption for the cartoon that agrees with your understanding of the sentence. If the caption is in the present tense, rewrite it using the past tense. If it's in the past tense, rewrite it in the present tense.


3. Talking is an action word or verb.


Analyze the grammar of the cartoon speakers. Make three columns in your notebook: description words, action words, and names of people, places or things. Add some of your own words that could be used to give the same meaning.


4. Write a paragraph describing the characters in the cartoon. Consider their physical appearance, emotions, speech patterns or anything unusual.


5. Smoking could be a topic to discuss.


Consider the main subject of the cartoon. Think about what the author is trying to convey and relate it to current events or historical problems. Write a paragraph that uses your own view to discuss the issue. Arrange for a few friends to get together to talk about these ideas. Give your notebook to a friend to offer suggestions on your work. Save your notebook to check on your progress in improving your English.
