The Advantages Of Working The Night Shift

Working at night offers many advantages that may outweigh the disadvantages.

People sometimes focus on the negative aspects of life. Instead of seeing your new graveyard-shift job as a glass half-empty, think more optimistically, and see the glass as half-full. Don't let a few a drawbacks of your shift time hinder you from seeing the benefits and advantages of such a work schedule.

More Money

If you work the night shift, you may be making up to 10 percent more money per hour more than your day-shift colleagues, depending on your industry. You can expect this 10 percent bonus if you work in most industries, including healthcare and pharmaceuticals, law enforcement and personal/corporate security, and even some retail outlets. In addition, if you happen to work as a writer or journalist for a television or radio station, you will likely earn up to 15 percent more than daytime writers; childcare workers earn up to 20 percent more for working at night, as opposed to during the day.

Fewer Meetings

If there's one aspect that business employees hate most, it's the incessant meetings required by the bosses. Working the night shift will usually exempt you from the majority of meetings, as you will need to be sleeping during regular business hours in order to perform your job duties well.

Little Traffic

Working the late shift can also be beneficial if you are someone who cannot stand to be in slow traffic. Working late generally requires you to go into work after the evening rush hour, which means the roads will generally be clear of traffic, making for a nice, easy ride with few interruptions.

Promotions

There is not a lot of competition or demand for night shift jobs. This means that when a higher position opens up, you will be more likely to get a promotion and pay raise than your daytime colleagues. There are usually many more employees vying for promotions and raises during the day; working at night greatly diminishes the number of competitors for night positions.

Greater Flexibility

You will probably be sleeping much of the day, but when issues arise, you are more likely to be able to meet those demands without interfering with your work schedule. Parents of small children can save money on a babysitter or daycare; you can pick your children up from school when needed; and you can have time to spend with the children before you head out to work.
