Draw A Pumpkin With Pastels

Draw pumpkins in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Chalk pastels are a versatile medium to use for drawing. You can draw with them, in a variety of colors, and then use them to color in your drawing. The downfall to using chalk pastels is that it is difficult to define details. However, the smooth, blended finish that you will achieve makes them worth using. Draw a pumpkin with chalk pastels to use for decorating your home in the fall, or combine it with other sketches of fall objects such as leaves and scarecrows to create an autumn scenic drawing. Define the rounded curves and details of the bulbous vegetable, and you will create an effective pumpkin drawing.

Instructions

1. Purchase a set of chalk pastels and pastel paper. Purchase pastel paper with a texture for best effect. Chalk pastel will not adhere well to smooth papers, so look for paper with a rough surface.

2. Sketch a circle to create the round pumpkin using an orange-colored pastel chalk. Sketch the swirly vines that come from the bottom of the pumpkin with green-colored chalk. Draw thin vines that are about the same length as the width of the pumpkin. Sketch them as wavy lines with loops and curled ends for a swirly vine effect.

3. Sketch the groove lines of the pumpkin using dark orange-colored chalk. Sketch one vertical line down the center of the pumpkin. Sketch two short vertical lines on either side of the center line on the top and bottom of the pumpkin, spaced equally apart, and rounded to define the shapes of the curves on the pumpkin.

4. Add definition to the outline of the pumpkin with orange-colored chalk. Create short, rounded lines, from one vertical groove line to the next, to define the outer shape of the curves.

5. Draw the stem of the pumpkin using brown-colored chalk. Draw a thick stem that curls from the center top of the pumpkin. Sketch pointed oval leaves with green-colored chalk on either side of the stem. Draw a line down the center of the leaves to define the veins.

6. Add detail to the vines of the pumpkin using green-colored chalk. Make the original vine lines you sketched thicker and color them in with green-colored chalk. Draw an outline of small oval leaves that come to a point along the edges of the vines. Add a small line down the center of the leaves to define the veins.

7. Fill in the pumpkin with color. Crosshatch lines by creating criss-crossing lines with the chalk pastels. Blend the colors by placing your finger or a blending stump on the lines, spreading the chalk across the areas you wish to color. When blending chalk pastel, the less pressure you apply with your fingers or the stump, the lighter the color will be.
