Face Painting Ideas For A Carnival

Face paint clowns and wild creatures.

Carnivals have an entertaining feel, making it the perfect theme for a fundraiser or birthday party. When you add a face painting booth to the event, you help others get into the right mood for the event. Face painters use non-toxic paints to add designs to children and adults alike. Face painting ideas for a carnival utilize the bright colors and themes of a carnival, including animals and clowns.

Clown Paint

Clown face painting ideas are fairly easy to accomplish because it only takes a few colors. The basic design involves painting white around the eyes and mouth. Darken the eyebrows with black or dark brown paint and color red circles on the cheeks. Add bright colors to the lips and exaggerate the size of the mouth, making it look bigger and wider. Turn the classic face into a jester by painting white on one side of the face and red or another bright color on the opposite side of the face. Paint black diamonds around the eyes and add more black face paint to circle the lips and mouth.

Animal Face Painting

Paint a combination of neutral colors and dark colors to create an animal face. For a basic dog face, paint the face with brown paint first and then color around the mouth with white or cream colored paint. Use black paint to create whiskers on the face and make a dog nose. Make a wild cat face by painting a light brown shade all over the face. Draw dots on the face with darker brown paint to create a leopard or, use the paint to create whiskers and stripes for a tiger.

Butterfly Ideas

Paint the basic outline of a butterfly across the face with black face paint. Fill-in the outline with brighter colors that mimic the shades used around the carnival. Pinks and purples may be more popular with girls, while boys may prefer darker shades, like green and blue. Add a few sparkles or smudge glitter around the top of the head.

Adult Friendly Carnival Ideas

If you're painting adult faces at the carnival, then mix and match lighter and darker colors. Create interesting shapes and highlight the features of the person's face. For example, paint the forehead a light purple color and paint the cheeks a pastel blue. Draw squiggles and other unusual shapes on the face with black and white paint. Add a small amount of glitter, if you like the sparkly look.
