Transfer Wall Art
Wall art or murals can enliven any room or building--wall art can be used in kids' rooms to imbue the room with a fun theme, in restaurants to ornament the space and express the culture of the cuisine, or on exterior walls to create a statement, recall an important event, or reflect the neighborhood. If you have a smaller image that you would like transfer to a wall, you can do it by using a grid or by using a projector.
Instructions
Using the grid method
1. Draw a grid over the image. If you do not want to damage the image, make a copy, or tape tracing paper over the original. Use a ruler to make an grid with one-inch squares.
2. Draw a square on the wall to outline where the transferred image will go. Determine the height-to-width ratio by multiplying the height and width (of the image and of the space where the transferred image will go) by the same numbers. Use the same height-to-width ratio as the image.
3. Draw a grid in the outline using the same number of squares as was created on the image so that the two grids correspond. Use a yardstick to trace the lines of the larger grid. You can use a level to make sure the lines are level.
4. Use the grid squares as a guide for drawing the image on the wall. Go square by square to draw small sections of the whole image at a time--they will help you to translate correct placement and proportion.
5. Erase the grid lines and proceed with painting.
Using the Projector Method
6. If your image isn't already digital, digitize it by scanning it into your computer or taking a close-up digital photograph.
7. Connect your computer to a digital projector with a USB cable. You'll need a laptop if the wall you intend to use is not near your home computer. You can rent digital projectors from audio-visual suppliers.
8. Open your image in an imaging program such as Preview or Powerpoint.
9. Aim the projector at the wall, and trace the projected image onto the wall.
10. Paint the image on the wall.
