Make Cold Canvas Transfers

Create your own art on canvas by transferring a favoriate print.

Fine art, with its associated costs, is out of reach to many art aficionados. Art posters can fill this void well, but the prints lack the earthy, texturized quality of the original paintings. Cold canvas transfers can bridge the gap between fine art and posters. Using this method, you can transfer an image to a canvas, creating a more authentic-looking copy of a print. You can even add brush strokes once the transfer is dry to create your own piece de r sistance.

Instructions

1. Cut the canvas 2 inches larger all around than the print using a utility knife to leave room for a mat and a frame once the transfer is complete, if desired.

2. Place the canvas on a flat work surface covered with a newspaper or drop cloth.

3. Apply liquid acrylic gel to a slightly damp sponge.

4. Sponge gel onto the canvas; apply an even coat to saturate the canvas.

5. Place the print image-side down on the canvas and smooth it out with your hands.

6. Drag a squeegee across the back of the print to eliminate any air bubbles.

7. Lift a corner of the print up after a few minutes to check the transfer's progress. Once the image has completely transferred to canvas, peel off the old print paper. Let the canvas dry.

8. Load a small paintbrush with acrylic paint in a color that complements the print, and apply brushstrokes randomly to the canvas to emphasize its textural quality.
