Fake grass can provide a very realistic landscape appearance in your project.
Fake grass can be added to many projects such as the classic elementary school art project the diorama, or to other models to give a realistic appearance of grass and green landscape. At first, making fake grass can seem like a daunting task, but it can actually be quite easy. Fake grass for a project can be made using several different methods. These include using green construction paper, dried moss or even shredded coconut.
Instructions
Paper Grass
1. Cut several sheets of green construction paper into longs strips or strands, each a few millimeters in width. To accurately cut the paper, place it onto a cutting board and mark out the strips using a pencil and ruler. Cut the paper into strands of your desired grass size using scissors. Alternatively, if you wish to create longer strands, shred green construction paper using a paper shredder.
2. Collect the strands and scrunch them together to give the crinkled appearance of grass.
3. Paint the base of whatever your grass will be placed on green or brown and apply the crinkled paper to the surface using glue.
Moss Grass
4. Collect moss from nearby trees or rocks. Wash the moss under warm running water to get rid of any insects that may be present. Place the moss on a flat surface and dry it using a paper towel or soft cloth.
5. Mold and reshape the moss into your desired shape. Lay it out flat or bunch it together to give a bundled, fuller appearance. Place the moss onto a tray and leave it out in the sun for a few days to dry completely.
6. Apply clear varnish to the moss to help preserve it and place it in your desired location. If the moss is not at your preferred shade of green, paint it using green spray or liquid-based paint.
Coconut Grass
7. Purchase shredded coconut from a grocery store. Pour some of the shredded coconut into a bowl.
8. Dye the coconut using either a few drops of green food coloring or some green spray paint. Stir the coconut together with the food coloring or paint using a spoon.
9. Place the dyed coconut onto a plate and allow it to dry for about ten minutes if you used food coloring or a few hours if you used spray paint.
10. Apply glue to the surface where the fake grass will be applied. Place the green coconut onto the surface and allow it to dry completely.
