Clay fossils are easy and inexpensive to make.
Whether your child is enamored of dinosaurs or has an affinity for rocks, make a special impression by creating fossils with clay. While fossils are remnants of things from the past, kids today can have fun making molds from practically any type of object they have collected or can find. Coins, shells and even small toys are all good options for creating fossils. Making fossils with clay offers an educational and hands-on way to teach about texture, depth and even a little archaeology.
Instructions
1. Assess the size of the object that will be used to make a fossil.
2. Divide a portion of clay and make sure it can accommodate the object being used to make the impression.
3. Place the clay onto a hard surface and use your hands to smooth out the top surface of the clay.
4. Make an impression by pressing the object onto the clay and then remove the object.
5. Rub shoe polish onto the surface and allow it to dry. Add a layer of acrylic sealer to permanently protect the fossil.
