There are retail products that claim to polish aluminum surfaces, but they can be expensive and contain harsh ingredients that can be harmful your family and home. Consider making a homemade aluminum polish composed of inexpensive, easy-to-find ingredients. These homemade polishes work as effectively as high-priced products, without the price tag.
Vinegar
A simple solution of vinegar and water will not only clean aluminum surfaces but also polish the aluminum to restore its original shine. In a spray bottle, mix equal parts of water and white vinegar. Spray directly onto the surface and wipe away with a soft cloth. For an extra shine boost, polish using a fine grain buffing pad made of steel wool. These can be found in grocery, hardware and auto supply stores.
Cream of Tartar
Cream of tartar also works to restore aluminum shine while also removing stains and dirt buildup. In a dish, mix two tablespoons of cream of tartar, and slowly stir in water until a thick paste has formed. Rub directly onto the aluminum surface and polish using a fine grain buffing pad. Wipe with a soft cloth to remove any residue, and your signature aluminum shine has been restored.
Lemon Juice and Baking Soda
A solution of lemon juice and baking soda also can be effective. In a dish, add two tablespoons of baking soda and slowly stir in lemon juice until a thick paste has formed. Rub the solution directly onto the aluminum surface using a soft cloth. Use a fine grain buffing pad to remove any built-up residue and polish the surface to its original shine.
