How Do You Draw Graffiti Letters

Graffiti lettering comes in all different shapes and sizes.

Graffiti is becoming increasingly popular as more and more people consider it an art form. Graffiti looks deceptively easy, but it can be very difficult to master. You'll need time and practice to perfect your own style. By following a few simple steps, you, too, can become an expert in the artistry of drawing graffiti letters. This article is about perfecting your letters before applying them in the outside world.

Instructions

1. Find inspiration from other artists. Before you begin it would be a good idea to spend some time looking at different styles of graffiti lettering. This will help you decide on the style you'd like to incorporate in your own lettering. Try looking through comic books; sometimes the elements found in this type of art can be a good starting point for beginners.

2. Write out your letters or words. This will form the base or template of your lettering. At this stage try not to focus too much on lettering style, as you'll be adding that later on. Instead, concentrate on spacing your letters, leaving reasonable space in-between to build up the letters once this step is finished.

3. Experiment with different styles and sizes. Once you've finished your template it's time to build it up. Try bold or italic styles and experiment with different fonts until you're happy. A key feature of graffiti lettering is that it should overlap. It would be a good idea to draft a copy of your design before the final rendering so that you can tweak it as much as you want.

4. Add detail. Once you've built up your lettering it should start to look more like graffiti lettering. Now it's time to add some detail. Do this by building up the outlines, or try adding shading and highlights to your letters to add a 3D effect.

5. Add color. The use of color in your lettering is very important, as the whole point of graffiti is to attract attention. With this in mind, experiment with bright colors to bring your piece alive. However, try not to make your letters look garish, as you want to attract attention in a positive way.
