Pencil Sketch A Photograph

For hundreds if not thousands of years, man has recreated the human image in artistic form. One of today's most popular methods of this craft is making a pencil sketch of a photograph. Follow these steps to try your hand at recreating a favorite photograph and expressing yourself through artistic sketch.

Instructions

1. Use a piece of tracing paper and cut it to fit over the photograph and affix it securely.

2. Draw lines on the tracing paper affixed to the photo, using a ruler to divide the photograph into even squares. The usual amount is four squares across by three squares vertically.

3. Divide the drawing paper into a grid using the same amount of squares as the tracing paper. Use light pencil marks and a ruler to create the grid.

4. Label each square on both pieces of paper. One way to label them is A1, A2 then B1 and B2 and so on. Remember to do this very lightly just like your grid lines so you can easily erase them later.

5. Sketch the details in each individual square, one at a time, using a pencil. Be sure that each square meets up correctly with its neighboring squares so the picture looks correct when you complete the sketch.

6. Erase all of the pencil grid lines and the labels for the squares. Do this gently and slowly so you don't mess up your sketch.

7. Go over the pencil sketch lines paying close attention to make them appear smooth with only one pencil line instead of rough and scratchy. You will then have a perfectly rendered sketch of the original photograph, done completely by your own hand.
