Create A Random Abstract Drawing

Create a Random Abstract Drawing

An abstract drawing doesn't represent anything, but that doesn't mean that any marks on paper are considered an abstract drawing. To create one, you should have an idea about what to express through the drawing. Once you have a particular feeling or idea in mind, look at a few pieces of abstract art to get an idea about create the general form.

Instructions

1. Choose the type of paper you will use and the colors that will best represent your idea. For basic sketching, choose manila drawing paper, but for more detailed, format drawings, choose a textured paper or heavier card stock that maybe has a color tint to it.

2. Start drawing. You can create a fast abstract picture by drawing lines going in any direction, either side to side, up and down, or diagonally. The lines should have random amounts of space between them, but not all of the lines should be parallel. The lines can cross each other at any point.

3. Color in the spaces in between the lines. The shapes will be irregular and uneven, which will keep the picture nonrepresentational. Those colored areas can be further bisected by more lines with more colors laid over those sections. Leave some of the sections blank if you like, but not in any particular pattern. You might choose the places that are left uncolored by dropping a coin and leaving a blank space where it lands.

4. Cover most of the page with the shapes. Any spaces that are left can be filled with color splotches or left blank. The idea is to make the entire picture a random assortment of shapes rather than something that looks too deliberate, so keep the shapes abstract.
