Paint Still Life Flowers

Paint Still Life Flowers

Painting still life flowers is as much about seeing as it is about painting. In order to paint a still life with flowers, the artist needs to learn really look at the flowers they see in front of them. Examine the shades, colors and shadows of the still life with flowers before beginning a painting. Notice the negative spaces between the flowers, and the flowers and the table. Walk around the sill life with flowers to find the most pleasing angle that you would like to paint.

Instructions

1. Set up a still life with flowers on a table. Place a plain cloth on the table first. The cloth will provide a non-distracting base for the still-life. Advanced still life painters may also paint the fabric into the sill life with flowers, to add texture and a soft quality to their painting.

2. Place a container or a vase in the center of the table for the flowers. The container may be a fancy glass vase, or a simple coffee can. The container you choose may be a reflection of the style of still life you choose to paint. A glass vase may create a more formal still life. Glass is also an interesting material to paint in any painting medium. A tin can may be better suited to an oils or acrylics when painting a still life with flowers.

3. Start painting the still life with flowers by creating an under painting with a light, neutral color from the paint palette. The under painting would be the equivalent of a rough sketch in drawing. The under painting will be the basic guideline used when painting a still life with flowers.

4. Build the under painting by adding another layer of the neutral color, adding shadows and darker shades. An under painting may also be done in miniature, before painting the actual still life. This can help the artist decide if the angle and lghtiing will work in the still life with flowers.

5. Paint in the large shapes first when painting a still life with flowers. The large shapes could be the container, the table, and the biggest flowers. Remember to include large negative shapes when painting a still life with flowers.

6. Edit the still life with flowers that you see in front of you by choosing not only what to paint, but what not to paint. What you leave out is also important when creating a still life with flowers.

7. Add the details to the still life painting last. The details include thin stems, shadows under the leaves, and any reflections in the still life with flowers.
