Inspirational Drawing Ideas

Create a new version of yourself.

Drawing ideas are easy to unlock from the imagination. Everyday life can serve as a source of inspiration. From the fruit bowl on the kitchen counter to the woman with long dreadlocks riding the subway, the possibilities are endless. There are items in your home, features of your best friend's face and lines in the sky that can inspire you to draw. Finding ideas can be as simple as taking an interest in details and noticing the world around you.

Silverware and Portraits

Use the shape of a spoon as inspiration.

The kitchen is a great haven for still life inspiration. Take out all of the spoons and study their individual shapes and forms. Sketch a couple and get a vibe for each object. Use this work as an inspiration for a portrait. Draw a series of portraits based on the different shapes of spoons. One drawing can be of a woman's face. This idea will allow you to use how you view an object as a vehicle to interpreting human characteristics.

The People in Your Life

The people in your life can be either family and friends or the strangers who cross your path. Human beings have backstories, and they tend to carry evidence of this. It can be present in their eyes, in the quality of their rugged knapsacks or by the choice of rocks on their fingers. Drawing the right image of someone can show what defines this person. People-watching can inspire great ideas, whether it is portraying a specific individual or creating an original character based on others.

The Mysteries in the Mirror

Hold a mirror up to your face and study it. Drawing self-portraits can be difficult, especially when it is not based on a photograph. To make the exercise more interesting, choose one facial trait which you think defines your face and change it. If you have childlike eyes, make them sultry and seductive. If you have a small nose, make it long and pointy. When the drawing is completed, explore who is the new person in the picture.

All Things Green

Observe the trees in your backyard and the neighbor's plants. Do the different colors complement each other? Take a hike in the park and notice the intricacies of the atmosphere. Look above you. What does the sun look like? What makes everything green beautiful? Notice the insects lying on rocks and the dirt beneath your sneakers. What role does it play in nature? Use these thoughts to formulate ideas for a nature-based drawing. Let your imagination wonder and be abstract.
