There are many ways to put a picture on canvas. If you simply want to transfer a photograph onto canvas, large photo businesses can scan your image and reproduce it for you in the same way they reproduce photography on paper. However, if you have an image in your mind or a photograph that you want to translate in paint onto a canvas, there are many approaches you can take, including, projecting the image, gridding the image and freehand drawing.
Instructions
1. Place your photograph or drawing in an opaque projector and move the projector so the image is in focus and filling the frame of your canvas.
2. Drawing with a hard lead pencil, lightly trace the image that is projected.
3. Grid your photograph using a pencil, making horizontal and vertical lines. This will create a square pattern over the surface of your photograph.
4. Grid your canvas the same way as your photograph. Each square now represents a tiny drawing and can be drawn square by square onto your canvas, similarly to connecting the dots.
5. To draw "freehand," simply use a pencil and replicate what you see in the picture onto the canvas, looking carefully at proportions.
