Instructions On Making Canvas Art From Photos

Computers, digital printing and canvas paper are easy mediums to use to create a piece of artwork on canvas. The variations and opportunities of the artwork are endless, given altering abilities of photo-manipulation software. Making a custom piece integrating your own photos and artistic abilities creates a personalized, priceless piece of artwork.

Size of Artwork

Before beginning, decide on a size for the artwork. If you are printing photos onto canvas using your own computer and printer, adhere to the limitations set forth by the capabilities of your computer and printer. Think about the location this work will be display when determining size.

Select a Photo

Choose a photo you would like to have in the artwork. Decide if you would like this to be a focal point of the photo, or if you would rather have the photo be a more discreet, background image. Scan the photo into the computer using a high-resolution setting.

Alter the Photo

Once the photo is in the computer, make alterations you would like for the artwork. Size the image to be appropriate for the selected canvas size. Change aspects of the photo that would enhance the artwork such as contrast or color. Experiment with the different filters and tools available in the photo program you are using to manipulate the image. Keep in mind that you will be adding a layer of paint to the top of the photo. Perhaps you would like to print the photo as a black and white image and hand paint on top of the image once it has been printed on canvas.

Print the Photo

Once alterations are complete, print the photo onto the canvas paper. Be sure to do a test print on plain paper before printing the final photo. If the photo is too large for your printer, use a commercial printer to have the photo printed on canvas. There are many available online with competitive pricing.

Paint the Photo

Using acrylic paint, begin adding a layer or two of details to the printed photo. Add a layer of paint and letting it dry before adding the next layer. Using a matte or gloss medium with the paint will create a translucency, allowing the photo to be viewable when the paint is applied on top of the photo. Work around and on top of the photo until the piece of artwork feels complete.
