Decorating Burlap Bags

Burlap bags usually come with their own silk screening designs already printed on the front, but if you cut a burlap bag in half or just turn it inside out, you can hide the printing. Burlap has a look all its own and, if decorated properly, can beautifully accent a wall or even a ceiling. Burlap looks great in a rustic atmosphere, mainly among browns and dried flowers. If you are looking for a way to use burlap to liven up a room, read through the following steps for some simple burlap decorating ideas.

Instructions

1. Cut a piece of burlap to size. Turn the sides under 1/2 inch and secure with hot glue. Purchase a variety of autumn-colored plastic or cloth leaves and glue them onto the burlap in your own creative design.

2. Insert the burlap into a frame or tack it to a wall using thumbtacks on each corner. You can also turn the top seam over onto a metal hanger, secure it with glue, and hang the burlap from a nail.

3. Lay flat a small burlap bag. Choose a color of fabric paint, preferably one that blends with the room decor your bag will be displayed in.

4. Dip a paintbrush into the paint and brush the burlap back and forth over the burlap pattern to enhance the bag's natural design. Dry brush for best results.

5. Brush the paint at an angle to bring out a crisscross pattern. Fill the bag with dried sage and set it in a corner of the room.

6. Airbrush a stencil design on a burlap bag for a shelf decoration. Purchase a letter stencil and black paint.

7. Apply the paint onto the bag using an airbrush machine or paint sprayer. You also can use a can of spray paint.

8. Paint over the letters to spell out the words you wish to write. You also can spray paint pictures or scroll designs. Fill the bag with rice or beans and set it on a shelf.
