Peony Flower Facts

There are more than two dozen species of peonies.

There are more than 30 species of peonies, a perennial (herbaceous) flower, including 10 species of the woody shrub variety. The peony flower is large, scented and colorful. The peony was a symbol of happiness, luck and wealth in ancient days.

Folk Medicine

In traditional folk medicine, the root of the peony has been used as a treatment for convulsions, asthma and menstrual cramps. The Japanese call the peony bush Ebisugusuri, which means medicine from China.

State and National Flower

The peony has been the state flower of Indiana since 1957. The peony replaced zinnia as the state flower. In China, the peony is called mudan. The mudan has been China's national flower since 1903.

Ants

Some believe that ants on a peony flower bud helps it open, but North Dakota State University Extension Service representative Ron Smith notes that there is no proof of the theory. Peony buds, he said, will open without ants being present.

Cut Flowers

Keep cut peony flowers fresh with a hydrating solution after cutting one inch off the bottom of the stem.

To make a hydrating solution, mix equal parts of a clear soda pop and tap water. Add 1 tsp. of household bleach per quart of solution.

Fertilizing

Although peonies are a hardy bush, you can help the plant by adding fertilizer after the blooming season with a slow-release fertilizer of 5-10-10 or 3-5-5 (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium). Place the fertilizer at least five inches away from the crown.
