Use Shading Techniques For Drawing

Shading techniques are the best way to introduce dimension to your drawing. It can be tricky at first, but if you master these techniques you will have no problem graduating to other more complex techniques.

Instructions

1. Get the right supplies. Shading pencils generally come in a variety of tones, and your best bet is to get a boxed set which ranges from dark to light. Before you start using the supplies remember that each pencil has a number and lettering and will range from light (1H) to dark (6B). The numbers indicate the tones and the letters are the category.

2. Draw your shape. You might want to start with a circle which has the best circumference to reflect light.

3. Think of where the light would be and start to shade on the opposite side. Use the darkest pencil first and remember to shade in uneven strokes as light is never evenly distributed. This allows greater depth. Try with the darkest pencil and use the medium ones and lighter ones for the upper parts. Do not shade all of the shape and leave some spaces in between and it is best to leave the lightest part unshaded.

4. With your index finger start to blend the different shaded tones starting from dark to light and remember to clean your fingers often. Your rubbing technique should get lighter as you progress upwards.

5. Depending on where the shape is place you can also place a shadow where the darkest part of the sphere is. This will give more illusion of depth.
