Make Shadow Drawings

A shadow picture is a great way for kids to make a special and unusual portrait of themselves to give to a parent, grandparent, or to keep for themselves. It's also a good way to teach a young artist the effects of light and shadow.

Instructions

1. Attach a piece of large, white construction paper to a blank wall with masking tape.

2. Put a table about six feet from the wall, and put a desk lamp on the table. Turn on the desk lamp and turn off any other lights. The room should be dark.

3. Stand with your side towards the wall so that the light casts the shadow of your profile on the white construction paper.

4. Ask a friend to lightly trace around the shadow of your profile with a pencil. Take the paper off the wall, and make sure the pencil line is clear. Cut out the profile along the pencil line.

5. Put the white profile on the black paper, trace around the white profile with a pencil and cut it out.

6. Glue the black profile on a piece of white poster board or tag board. Decorate the portfolio any way you like, or leave it plain.
