Paint Auto Flames

Flames on a car is one way to get a customized, unique look.

For a unique-looking vehicle, painting flames is one way to customize your car. It is a fairly simple task needing only masking tape, a freehand drawing or template, and some auto paint. Allow your car to dry in between coats and to cure overnight for a polished, one-of-a-kind car.

Instructions

1. Draw a freehand sketch of the flames onto graph paper. Drawing it to scale will make it easier to transfer onto your car. Take into consideration where the curves and dips of your car are and where the flames will fall onto the car. If you cannot freehand a drawing, find a drawing of the flames that you would like to paint.

2. Blow up the drawing to the size of the area that you want the flames to cover on your car. This can be done at a copy store, or by hand. Cut out the outline of the flames.

3. Tape down the template that you cut out onto your car. Tape down the cutout and use masking tape to outline the flames. Remove the template.

4. Cover any areas that are not to be painted with tarp or newspaper. Headlights, door handles and windows will need to be covered as well. Secure the newspaper or tarp with tape.

5. Paint on the flame color using red or orange paint in the spray paint gun. Spray in quick, long strokes to avoid paint dripping. Allow time to dry between coats. Two to three coats is standard to get even coverage.

6. Paint on orange or blue as highlights to your flames for a more realistic look. Highlights look best when painted in the lowest part of the flames or along the tips and edges.

7. Dry for up to 24 hours away from elements like extreme heat, rain or wind. Paint on a clear coat if desired for a shiny, polished look.
