Paint Aluminum Valve Covers

Aluminum valve covers are a popular choice over steel valve covers because they are lightweight, durable and long-lasting. However, aluminum valve covers can become discolored and stained over time, so painting them keeps them looking good longer and makes them easier to clean. Painting aluminum valve covers requires specific steps before spraying the paint so that the paint doesn't peel or flake off in a short amount of time. The materials can be found at any auto parts store and the valve covers can be prepped and painted in just a few hours.

Instructions

1. Use 400-grit sandpaper to sand the entire surface of the valve covers. Fold the sandpaper in half to reach in all corners and cracks of the valve covers. The paint will not adhere to any areas left unsanded.

2. Sand the entire surface of the valve covers again using the 800 and then the 1200 grit sandpaper. The gradual increase in the grade of the sandpaper will result in a smoother surface, but also allows the paint to adhere.

3. Wipe the aluminum valve covers with rubbing alcohol to remove any remaining debris that could cause imperfections in the finished paint job. Let the alcohol evaporate before moving to the next step.

4. Spray a coat of primer on the surface of the aluminum valve covers. Keep the spray can six to eight inches from the surface. Make sure the primer covers the valve covers and leaves no bare metal showing through. Let the primer dry for thirty minutes.

5. Apply a total of three coats of spray paint to the surface of the valve covers. Keep the coats light to avoid runs in the paint. Let the paint dry for three to four hours before handling the valve covers.
