How great would it be if you could draw a puppy at an artist-grade quality? It sounds like a daunting task, almost impossible. But it can be easy if you take the proper steps.

1. Start by forming large round shapes to represent major parts of the puppy. Draw these lightly and in pencil. A large oval should represent the torso, another circle for the head and more circles for the snout and paws. The drawing already should look vaguely like a puppy.
2. Connect the shapes in the logical formation of a puppy. Connect the paw circles to the torso with leg-like lines and connect the rest. This also should be done in pencil.
3. Work on adding the puppy's other structural components such as the ears, tail, bottom jaw and tongue. These also should be rough and drawn lightly. By now, the drawing should look more like a puppy, but missing some parts.
4. Start on the details such as the eyes, nose, teeth and fur patterns. Do not color them in; for now, just draw the outlines of the details. Also, add the background. If the puppy is sitting outside, draw the grass, clouds in the sky and the sun. The drawing should represent an unfinished, yet detailed drawing of a puppy.
5. Decide if you want your drawing to be in color or black-and-white. If you opt for color, take map pencils and color the drawing starting with the puppy and working outward to the background. Perhaps the puppy is brown with black spots. Color the spots first, then the rest of the fur. If you take the black-and-white approach, stick with your pencil and color in the spots dark with your pencil. Also, fill in the nose and dark parts of the eyes. You might want to add a shadow under your puppy. If so, decide where the source of light is coming from to create the shadow and imagine where the shadow would be cast. When you fill in the shadow, do not shade it too darkly, but shade it enough so it looks like a shadow.
