Draw Patterns & Designs

Being able to draw designs and patterns is an artistic endeavor that requires the artist to apply and manipulate geometric shapes. Design and pattern drawing is ideal for beginners learning to draw because what constitutes good design can be subjective in nature. With a little patience and practice, you can learn to draw and design patterns.

Instructions

1. Make a rough sketch before you begin the actual design. The design pattern is typically geometric in origin, with manipulations of the basic shape patterns. Make a few sketches before you begin, then choose one for further development. Study some examples of chip carvings, which often feature intricate designs of a Celtic nature.

2. Start simple. Use a protractor to draw lines, half circles and other shapes. Overlap some shapes until you see a pattern or design begin to emerge. Keep your lines light at first, which will make it easier for you to erase them as needed. Overlapping can help create design patterns you may not have considered.

3. Erase any overlapping lines that do not fit the emerging pattern. Think of it as carving your sketch, cutting away until you bring out the design. As the pattern starts to take shape, darken the lines you want to keep, then continue adding new elements. Try hiding an image inside your design or adding a contrasting pattern on top of your original pattern to help create an interesting effect.

4. Use color pencils to color your design. The best way to bring out the various patterns of your design is to vary the density of the colors on different parts of the pattern. Color selection is also important, although deciding which colors work well together is subjective. By combining the various layered shapes of your design with interesting color choices, you can create one-of-a-kind design patterns.
