Find Drawing Ideas

Drawing ideas are not always readily available when facing a blank piece of paper. Everyone experiences a drawing slump from time to time. Finding ideas for drawing can be as simple as looking at objects, nature and people around you.

Instructions

1. Look around the room or environment you are in. Draw what is in front of you. The quality of a drawing comes from how lines, shades and textures are put down on paper more so than the objects that are drawn. The objects on a desk, for example, make great drawings.

2. Empty objects from your pockets or purse onto a surface in front of you. This is a form of a still life which is also autobiographical.

3. Expand your vision to the rest of the room you are in. Interiors are often the subjects of drawings.

4. Go outside if weather permits. Nature is an unending, ever-changing source of ideas for drawings.

5. Find a mirror and draw a self-portrait. You are always present when drawing and so always available as a subject. Keep a running series of self-portraits as many of the masters did. Draw one whenever you run out of ideas.

6. Use others in your life or environment. Find a family member that is sitting relatively still. Perhaps draw someone sitting near you in the park or at a bus stop.

7. Doodle to generate ideas for drawing that are more abstract. We often have favorite forms that we repeat over and over as we doodle. Develop these forms into more finished drawings.
