Art explores the world around you.
By sixth grade, students are familiar with basic art theory. It is important to build upon those foundations and keep their interest as you introduce more advanced art concepts. Through the use of carefully planned projects sixth grade art students start to learn the language of design by exploring use the seven elements of design: Line, Shape, Color, Form, Space, Value and Texture.
Relating Artistically
Teaching by design.
At this intermediate level, art allows students the opportunity to learn about themselves by expressing their thoughts and feelings through their creativity. They discover new ways to problem-solve and define a sense of place by directly participating in their history and culture. By working with others in pairs or groups, they begin developing a sense of community. Sixth grade art, designed to enhance and strengthen motor skills, also promotes new ways for students to perceive the world as they seek their own place within it.
Multiple Forms
Discovering the shape of things.
By reiterating the core concept of how one expresses oneself to the world through the use of multiple artistic forms such as drawing, painting, photography and sculpture, students deepen their appreciation for the variety and opportunity in their communities. With each form, students receive time to discover their own voice and place in the world in relation to the art at hand. They should learn it is acceptable to change their artistic concepts and visions after they begin the art project because the project itself influences its development.
Critical Analysis
Understanding by analysis.
Sixth grade art students receive encouragement to reflect and learn from their experiences. After each exploration into form and design, the teacher uses presentations, classroom discussions, and art history to assess and evaluate students' understanding of core concepts. Through student/teacher discussions and respectful peer analysis, the teacher encourages students to develop those areas of artistic strength and directs them to explore new ways to improve areas of weakness.
Seven Elements of Design
Self-awareness through self-expression.
Through the exploration of a variety of artistic forms, students incorporate the concepts of composition, perspective, emotion and mood into art pieces through the use of the seven elements of design. Understanding how each element works in relation to the materials of the project enhances students' motivation, communication skills, self-awareness, confidence, self-discipline and problem-solving abilities. The use of line, shape, color, form, space, value and texture all further students' understanding of self and their place in the world.
