Do the Figure-8 With Hips Move in Egyptian Belly Dancing
The figure-8 is one of the most popular moves in belly dancing. If you want to do the figure-8 with hips move for Egyptian belly dancing, you simply need to learn 2 different isolation moves and then put them both together to create the figure-8 pattern. With a little practice, you'll have the move down pat.
Instructions
1. Learn the twisting isolation. This isolation is just like it sounds; you begin by twisting your hips to the right or the left while keeping your rib cage stationary. You want to imagine that there's a line running down your center, and that your hips are twisting around that point.
2. Practice the slide isolation. This second isolation requires you to move your hips to the left or the right horizontally. This movement should be in 1 fluid motion, keeping the rest of your body still.
3. Draw an imaginary pattern on the floor. To do a figure-8 motion, you need to picture in your mind a figure-8 on the floor. With your hips, trace around that imaginary line to create 1 fluid movement. Begin by moving your body forward and back, stopping briefly in the center, and then repeat on the other side.
4. Put everything together. Once you have the 2 moves down, you can combine them to make a figure-8. It should feel as if your hips are ice cream scoops and you're scooping something out with each movement. The more you practice, the better you'll become at isolating the different muscle groups for these moves.
