For millennia, dragons played large roles in mythical history and in people's imaginations throughout the world. Their significance can be seen in ancient artwork, reflecting these fierce, sometimes benevolent beasts. You can choose a Western-style dragon or a Chinese-style dragon to capture. All it requires is some time and crafting supplies.
Instructions
Dragon Body
1. Select the dragon image from clip art that you want to use. Choose a dragon with a long wavy body. Pick one with horns for a fierce look.
2. Save the image in your "Pictures" folder. Print the image on transparency paper if using a projector. Print it on plain paper as a guide if you will be drawing the image freehand.
3. Place the transparency paper on the projector. Prop the foam core against the wall. Manipulate the projected image to show up in the center of the foam by moving around the project. Make the projected image as large as you can.
4. Trace the image on the foam core using a pencil. If drawing freehand, lay the foam down on a large table or floor and draw the image onto the foam with a pencil.
5. Turn off the projector and examine your image to insure you traced every part. Retrace the image with black permanent marker.
6. Repeat this entire process with the second piece of foam. Cut out both images from the foam core sheeting using a sharp knife or box cutter.
7. Paint both foam core dragons with craft paints. Use a sponge brush to cover large areas like the dragon's body. This makes it less time-consuming. Paint both sides of each foam piece, allowing the painted area to dry on one side before flipping it over to paint the other side.
Handles and Horns
8. Cut four eight-inch sections from your elastic. Use a hot glue gun to glue two sections of the elastic on one side of each dragon. Glue one handle towards the front, one towards the back, vertically. These two handles make it easy for two people to carry the dragon.
9. Cut three-foot sections from the 22-gauge wire using wire cutters for two horns. Wrap tissue paper around the wire, twisting it into the shape of long thin horns. Wrap the horns in duct floral tape to keep their shape.
10. Spray-paint the horns with gold spray paint. Do this in a well-ventilated area.
11. Glue each horn on the dragon head. Glue the horn inside the foam core so no one can see where it is attached.
