Draw Anime Sonic Characters

Sonic is a fictional character from the video game Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic has his own comic series, television series and movie collection. Because of the Sonic franchise's popularity, many aspiring artists want to draw Sonic characters. In recent years, the drawing style used for creating Sonic characters has a unique anime feel. All one needs to draw characters in this style are the basics of figure drawing and practice.

Instructions

1. Review a reference picture of the Sonic character you wish to draw. You can find a reference picture by following the link in the resource section below. Make note of features unique to the character such as ears, head spikes, eye shape and shoe wear. Practice sketching those features quickly onto paper. Do not try to create a finished drawing -- focus on becoming familiar with the character's outfit and structure.

2. Sketch a rough draft of your Sonic character. Draw a circle to map out the characters head and pencil a vertical line down the center of the circle to map the facial features. Create the torso by sketching a smaller circle below the head, placing it so the two nearly touch. Map out the pose of the arms and legs by drawing two lines extending from the sides of the torso and two lines extending from the torso's bottom. Make sure both the arms and the legs are twice the length of the character's torso.

3. Draw the basic outline of your character using your rough draft as a guide. Start with the head and draw the basic shape of the character's ears, head spikes, and outline of their snout. Do not draw a neck for the character and develop the shape of their arms, body and legs. Draw the large hands and feet, matching their size to the size of the character's body.

4. Erase the markings of your rough draft. Draw the facial details of the character. Create the eyes by drawing upside down "U" shapes starting from the center of the character's face. Make the eyes to be more slanted for meaner looking characters and more rounded for innocent characters. Sketch the nose of the character extending from the middle of where the character's eyes meet. Draw the mouth of your character on the side of their face for an anime effect. Use your reference picture as a guide whenever necessary.

5. Review your drawing and correct any mistakes you find. Draw the details of the character's body. Follow your reference picture and sketch in any large gloves, body fur, color patterns, shoe designs and jewelry worn. Work slowly and follow the shape of the outline to guide you. Draw your character's fingers smooth and with few bends. Avoid adding too much detail to your characters costume. Simplify your drawing by omitting things like clothing folds and fur texture.

6. Erase any smudges and extra pencil markings found. Ink your drawing by tracing over your lines with a black pen. Make the outline of your character thicker than the lines of the inner details. Erase all your pencil markings for a clean look. Add shading to your drawing using a cross hatching method with your black pen.
