The type of movies men like can be a bit different then what many women expect. Although a man might occasionally like a romantic movie or a musical, for the most part male tastes can be separated in to several broad categories. These often reflect the different parts of the male psyche and reflect their values. Often the themes present in these movies are about honor, duty or protection of family and act as stress relief.
War Movies
Men like a good war movie. Even if real war is hell, seeing a fake war displayed on a screen can bring men to the theater. A war movie often reflects many ideas that men have values, such as honor, duty, friendship and adversity against overwhelming odds. War movies can be action, comedies or dramatic but they also are their own genre. The movies can be about armies battling one another for the fate of the world or simple tales about a lone man trying to survive until he can get back home.
Action Movies
Men like action movies because of big explosions, big guns, the elimination of bad guys and the presence of beautiful women. An action movie can come in many forms and types, such as the dramatic retelling of historic events or a fantastical space dog fight. Even pirates can be used as action foils with romps around the Caribbean in the 18th Century. An action movie often is light on story and with heroes that survive situations that would kill a man in real life. These movies are fantasies and a break from reality, helping many men live another life and relieve stress.
Comedy Films
This style of film provides a way for a man to laugh at himself and others in various situations. This can lead to a man letting off emotional steam and unwinding in times of stress. Comedies can come in the form of a farce, a slapstick charade, a subtle ironic tale or even a sarcastic movie full of witty one-liners. Often, different men like different types of comedies, since what one man may find amusing may be insulting to another. Yet, this does not stop men from watching the comedies they enjoy in the presence of their friends or colleagues.
Dramatic Movies
Dramatic presentations are often a staple in a man's movie repertoire. Men like drama because it helps them cope with everyday experiences. It also helps a man experience life beyond their current surrounding A dramatic retelling of a mobster's rise and fall may not be something a man desires to live, but seeing it played out in a film can be enjoyable and heart-wrenching. It helps when a drama is filled with action and comedy but neither is needed for a man to like these films.
