Create a cake that looks like a peace sign.
When you are hosting a party with a 1960s theme, or are making a birthday cake for someone who embraces the hippie lifestyle, make a cake that looks like a big peace sign. Making this cake does not require baking expertise, but it will look quite professional when you are finished. Use fondant, which is available in most grocery stores, to create the peace sign decoration on this basic cake.
Instructions
Creating the Basic Cake
1. Mix the cake batter according to the instructions on the box. Divide the batter between two round cake pans and bake the cakes as directed on the box of cake mix.
2. Allow the cakes to completely cool. Place one cake on the cake platter. Use a knife to trim away any excess that gives the top a rounded shape. Put a layer of white frosting on the top of the cake.
3. Place the second cake on top of the first one. Trim away any excess cake that makes the top of the cake rounded.
4. Frost the entire cake with white icing, smoothing it out with a knife or spatula.
Decorating the Cake
5. Purchase a package of black fondant from a grocery store or a specialty baking store.
6. Use a rolling pin to roll out the fondant thinly to an area that is larger than the cake.
7. Place the cake pan down onto the fondant and press lightly, making an impression. Use a pizza wheel to cut out a circle that is slightly inside the cake pan's impression. Cut another circle about an inch inside the first one, creating the outline of a circle. Place the circle on the cake as the outline of your peace sign.
8. Use the cake pan to determine how long the straight center line of the peace sign needs to be. Use a pizza cutter to cut out a straight line that is about an inch wide. Place it on the cake so that it runs down the center.
9. Cut two more inch-wide lines that are half the length of the one running down the middle. Place those two lines on the cake to create the diagonal lines that complete the peace sign.
